This is a non-boot related break from what is a boot-heavy newsletter.

So, I've documented my journeys with Jay Butler over the years—from business meetings to beaches to vineyards, and even all the way to the golf course. Safe to say they're my favorite warm weather loafers to wear.

3 things I like most about them is their comfort, durability over time and casual, yet elevated style. My personal favorites are the Cromwell Penny or Millbank Bit Loafer, both in suede. There's just something about the nap texture of a rich suede. 😍

Ah, the gift that no one wants but everyone is getting this year—Inflation. Higher prices are making it particularly taxing on presents as 2022 comes to a close. But the good thing is that you don't have to spend a lot to be a great gift giver.

Vox put together an excellent guide on gift giving and how to become a truly great gift giver.

I've taken notes and here are the highlights:

Three-point framework for thinking about gift-giving:

  • Can I introduce someone to something they might not otherwise know about?
  • Can I get them a nicer version of something than they would buy for themselves?
  • Can I make them feel seen?

If you can check one of those three boxes, you’ve probably got a good present on your hands.

Keep a running list of gift ideas:

Almost universally, great gift-givers are doing legwork throughout the year, not just in the weeks leading up to a birthday or major holiday. Many keep lists of potential gifts for their friends and loved ones, which they update every time someone mentions an item they’d love or when their internet travels turn up a particularly great present idea.

Steer clear of asking your loved ones what they want — something that Crystal L. Bailey, director of the Etiquette Institute of Washington, suggests avoiding.

When in doubt, turn to one of these categories:

  • Books
  • Food, beverages, consumables

The biggest version of the thing possible:

And finally, if you know that someone loves a particular item, just get them a ton of it. Absurd volume is funny, knowing, luxurious, and a little bit teasing. It could be a huge box of pink Starbursts or 24 pairs of knit socks. Whatever you get, be sure to go overboard.
